Blade griders...good enough? was created by Req
I use a Melitta blade grider and a French press to make coffee. Is that on okay setup? I've heard blade griders hurt the beans, but is this true? I don't want to waste money on a burr grinder only to find out the taste difference is minimal.

Any help would be appreciated! :)

Blade grinders = bad, bad, bad...

And if this website has not conveyed that fact in the last 10 years then I am failed miserably.

Blade grinders are great for spice...

but never for coffee.

Well, I never make espresso at home so I guess I'm looking at getting a new burr grinder that can do a good French Press style grind then?

Well, at Transcend they sell some burr grinders:

- Baratza Virtuoso conical burr grinder
- Breville Stainless Steel Conical Burr Grinder

It seems Baratza is a good name. The Baratza Vario is way out of my range (almost $500 or so). So what about those two I posted? Thoughts? Is there another one you would recommend?

Thank you for your time!

In reading your Baratza Virtuoso review Colin, you said it was leaning more toward an espresso grind? Does this mean it's grind for a french press isn't that good?

If all you are doing is grinding for French press, get a HARIO manual burr grinder for around $40 from EspressoTec.com

Even for drip coffee this would be a good grinder -- and you get a work-out!

$40? Wow, that saves me a lot of money!

If I did get the Hario, and if I got myself the Technivorm (which I'm still scratching my head on... hmmm....), is the Hario good for that as well?

You said "drip coffee" so I'm taking you meant normal drip-style machines (Technivorm, et al)?

Sorry Colin for all these questions. I'm really a newbie at this...

Thank you for all the help!
