I generally do a heaping tablespoon (or is it 2...) for every 6 fluid ounces of hot water I use.
I pour hot water, 30s off the boil, into the bodum carafe and agitate with a swirling motion to wet the grinds (for about 3s) and then I let it sit with the upper filter just touching the surface of the water/coffee mix. I let it sit for exactly 3 minutes before I press - and I use a digital timer.
The amount of coffee used is fairly flexible - 1 or 2 heaping tablespoons for 6-8 fluid ounces of water.
The 3 minute steep time is optimal.
A 4 minute steep, I think, would allow some undesirable flavors to develop.
