Stuck Brass Rod in Filter Holder was created by Augestflex
Hello,

First I apologize is this is a similar post as I just made one and I can't locate it, perhaps there was a timeout on my side.

After years of being the lucky recipient to lattes made by my brother on his Atomic, I've finally acquired a nice brownish Robbiati!

Unfortunately I was unable to make a few cups of coffee with it due to the brass rod with a red knob becoming stuck in the filter grouping. I had read about the BBK and was careful not to leave it in, unfortunately I didn't realize this was also an issue with the brass steam rod.

So far my brother and I have tried several methods, unsuccessfully, to remove the rod. These include wiggling/pulling and various methods then followed by wiggling/pulling of the rod. I've headed up the whole head unit with boiling water, I attempted to just heat up the grouping area while keeping the brass rod cold with ice. We've tried soaking the grouping/filter area in a light vinegar bath (hoping perhaps that dried coffee residue was part of the issue). None of these methods have worked and currently the Atomic is in the freezer as the next attempt will be to see if that helps.

I believe that the grouping (aluminum maybe?) has shrunk around the brass rod. I'm a little leery of using a tap set or punch since the metal area around the horizontal holes has some minor cracks in it. Of course there really aren't any holes there right now since the brass rod goes all the way through the holes in the grouping.

I've also removed both red knobs in an attempt to remove the whole filter and grouping but with the brass rod in place the filter does not twist off as the brass rod does not clear the neck of the Atomic.

Any tips or suggestions would be appreciated as I would like to remove the brass rod and return my newly found Atomic to good working order.

Please let me know if I can post any images or additional information to assist with the issue.

Thanks,

Shad

Is there any rotational movement at all? That is, can you twist it some in its hole?

I was thinking WD40 or something.

Our Guru of all things Atomic does not speak in these parts anymore - so I cannot ask him for his opinion.

Yes - send or post pictures... any size up to 320 X 240 pixel is good...

OR E-mail me BIG photos and I will put them in the gallery

Hello Colin and thank you for your response! There is no rotational movement, or back and forth movement at all. There is however a small area between the grouping hole and the brass rod, on the end with the knob, for a short distance. Once I get home from work I'll try WD40, I was hesitant to do so since the Atomic is for drinks.

I'll also put up some pictures.

Thanks again for the information!

Hello Colin,
I've emailed you five photos of the atomic. Two photos showing the unit and three which show the grouping and the brass rod which is stuck in it.

Please let me know if there are other images that I could post if necessary.

I'll give WD40 a shot and let you know how it comes out.

Thanks,

Shad

Hello again!

Back from PDC 2008 at the Los Angeles Convention Center.

Once I got back I was able to try using WD40 on the stuck brass rod, but unfortunately it did not help to remove the rod. I'll probably try Liquid Wrench next.

Hi there,
You don't need that brass rod.
Cup your hand around the group and tap it out with a hammer. Consistent blows, not hard ones. It WILL come out.

When heated up the aluminum group swells. If you insert the brass rod, it's cold. All is fine up to now....

You can't retract it after frothing of course because of the inherent possibility of scalding and making a mess....so you leave it.

Then the aluminum contracts around it. Quite solidly I'm afraid. And the minute cracks you may see are the result of that contraction.
Don't worry, it will come out. I have seen many groups with hammer marks around that tapered hole.
YOU DO NOT NEED IT AT ALL if your grind is the proper size! Listen to me! When you have removed that rod, file down the mushroomed end, clean it and stick it in a drawer. OR if you insist in using it (you DON'T need it at all....but I've said that) heat it BEFORE inserting it. It will also resume to it's size when it cools down.
Leave the chemicals aside, as you have seen they don't work.
Just hit the damn thing.
Toodle dee doo cracker bits.
