I love coffee so I am pretty stressed about my machines breaking down. The store replaced my Brevilles, but I need a more reliable brand. I have been searching through reviews for too long. I think many consumer sites are filled with people who are excited at first about their machine, but lose interest later so they never get to the point of making months of daily shots. I liked my Breville too before it broke down. All of my machines broke w/in 6 mos. or so. I worked at a coffee shop so I know what I am doing. It seems some machines don't last. This is more important than shot quality to me because I cannot afford something over 750. Still though, my shots have been better than my neighborhood coffee shops. I am looking for a "Honda" of a machine. Any ideas?
Does anyone know why these machines break down so quickly?
Of course I realized the Breville isn't a good machine after the second return, but Williams Sonoma offered to exchange or to upgrade 200. for a different machine, not return my money. I haven't seen very good reviews for the 799. Ascaso or the 799. Baby Gaggia Twin Espresso Machine (which has a lead warning label on it). These are my other options or lose all of my money. I would appreciate helpful reviews for the Ascaso, Baby Gaggia or a new option w/in my price range. I was hoping that Williams Sonoma would grow tired of my returns and just give my money back but I may be out of luck.
I have never purchase prepackaged. All of my beans are roasted and then ground w/in 2 days by my local espresso store. I don't have time to grind my own beans. Sure it tastes better, but I am cutting corners with time. There is an espresso store blocks away so I am content with this. I am not as picky about this as I am about a machine that will last a while. I have a lot of experience in espresso but not in machines. For the time being, I am looking for something under 800 that won't break.
The oils that make up the crema are volatile; as they evaporate, so does the potential crema. And to make matters worse, the grind fineness changes as they evaporate (finer and finer). The only machines that can readily produce a non-gusher with preground coffee are those with "pressurized portafilters," but the result is lifeless, dull, black bitter brew.
If you wish to experience it firsthand, go to any Williams-Sonoma and ask them to demonstrate one of their espresso machines using their premium $20+ a pound Illy preground espresso blend.
With that said, if you're looking for a well built machine you can't go wrong with a Rancilio Silvia.
