Have you found a roaster yet? I have been playing around with the Fresh Roast SR500 (about $160)...Basically a glorified popcorn popper but with the ability to control heat and airflow.
It has a clear glass hopper so you can see your beans. There is a chaff containment screen that works well.
I am far from an expert roaster but I like my results. For something suitable for espresso I head for the start of the second crack. The SR500 has a 'Cool' button that you can nail that kills the heat while retaining airflow so you can coast to a stop.
Curiously I discovered if you drink a martini while roasting it take on an distinct coffee flavour as the alcohol absorbs the aroma!
