Ok, I took off the shower screen, and then the screen holder by removing the two allen bolts. All I see behind the holder is solid metal with one small hole where the water flows out. Is it possible that I have to try to access the spring from the inside by removing the boiler (hoping very much the answer is no...)?

Really appreciate your help with this.

I have been corrected by one of our senior writers on coffeecrew.com - the "pea" and spring only applies to the non-solenoid Gaggias - like the Gaggia coffee.

Entirely possible you have a stuck 3-way solenoid.

Will read back into what you have written so far and see what pops out of my head next - this adventure of yours was not in vain - is good for everyone to get acquainted with their machine.

Problem solved! It was a bad solenoid coil, which I was able to replace without having to replace the entire solenoid. Thanks again for your help.
