Ok ... I got me them thar beans I mentioned last week.
Before I start I'm thinking I should let you all know about me and coffee. This is my first attempt at trying to describe coffee here and the descriptions are going to be pretty rudimentary. I am by far no expert other than I love coffee and have developed some favourites. I do not have any formal instruction on coffee tasting and have never attended a cupping. I hope I get the chance to change that in the future. So this is going to be what it is for now. At least maybe I can generate some interest in this category and get some posting going on about your favourite coffee(s). After all if I can stumble through this, so can you.
What are they? What are these coffee beans I was referring to? It is
Panama Carmen Estate
coffee I picked up from Lisa Rotenberg at
rocketfuelcoffee.com
.
I order this from Lisa and get it in about a week which works out for me pretty well. The packaging is top notch I would say and Lisa has included some of her own art work to decorate the bags of coffee, very nice and unique touch. They show up in half pound bags and I ordered up one pound of coffee … two baggies. Of course Lisa included a teaser of her
Sumatra Organic.
, this girl knows how to market and I don't think she knows that Sumatra coffee is a favourite of mine, second nice touch.
So what's this coffee like?
Two goes with it in my moka pot, as I do like a nice strong cup first thing in the morning. Why two? Because everything deserves a second chance just in case the first one wasn't as good as the second. And in this case, the second was even better than the first. Why? Well the first try I tapped the basket down a bit to get a little more coffee into the basket. The results were enjoyable. It made for a very strong cup of coffee. I added a some water to make it half coffee and half water in my cup and it was still a strong cup. Let me jump to the second attempt with Kitty the moka pot. No tapping of the basket this time, well ok, maybe just a small one at the end before leveling it off. I couldn't help myself, I know I didn't want to do it, but I did just lightly tap the basket to settle the grounds. This one was better than the first. Still a strong cup of coffee, again half coffee and half water and what a wonderful cup of coffee it was. I'm thinking the next time I make it up with Kitty that I do not tap the coffee down into the basket at all and see how things come out.
Am I going to get into a long description of the flavour. Not yet. Why? Because I would like to try a couple of times more with it to see how it comes along. I really really enjoyed it so far. Very much looking forward to having some more from the moka pot and in my coffee press as well. Not only that, I have a difficult time describing the flavour I get from coffee. Sometimes I just gauge it by how quickly I down my cup and get on to the next one, or how much I savour each taste. This is where learning about cupping would be a good idea.
