I managed to fix the Procon rotary pump today although it is a bit leaky in places, all that it need was to replace the o-ring behind the backplate-not leaking from the backplate).
Well I finally powered up the Astra good new is that the boiler fills-the element works great-no leaks in the boiler. Huge amounts of steam and hot water. At this point I don't have a a portafilter to see if I can pull a shot. I also need the brew group gasket. The entire brew group head heats up very nicely, when you toggle the brew switch the pump comes to life. The only thing is the gauges don't work it is giving me a 200psi pump pressure and variable boiler pressure-or does not move at all.
There is a pressure valve that lives beneath the group head-when I toggle the brew group switch (as I would to pull a shot)- at the end of the brew there is a small amount of water that is released from that valve is that normal?

Anyways more to come

Yup - there is a 3-way solenoid in there - and that is the solenoid at work, bypassing the pressure from the portafilter (when it's actually there...)

I would think many commercial p-filters would fit on that - and the Astra is a current machine... so...

Keep us posted,

Colin is right. Any E61 commercial or naked portafilter would fit your Astra. Also any E61 group gasket should fit. You just have to figure out what size works best. Usually 8mm or 8.5mm.

Looks like you found yourself an awesome deal. A new Astra Gourmet is over US $2,500.

Hello all,the Astra is now plumbed in and ready to go. I have powered it up a few times and everything seems to work, tones of steam and hot water.I have not although pulled a shot yet. I have the double portafilter coming from Larcan in Vancouver along with a new brew group seal and a dispersion screen...I can't wait. In the meantime I have picked up a good used Nuova Simonelli MDX grinder for 385.00. I feel this will be a good grinder-stepless 65mm burrs etc.
More to come...
Thanks for all of the info.

cheers

I had a very interesting day yesterday,I finally figured out why I was getting blonde, unextracted shots for the last 6 months-my Rocky grinder is not working as it should. Even at the stop, which is three, it is still coarse. So for an experiment I pulled out my old and battered Braun home burr unit. I could not believe when I pulled a shot on the Atstra- slow honey-like tiger stripped goodness. Well holly s#@t, I thought this whole time I thought it was the coffee, my tamp, the machine and it was the grinder. I promptly phoned Espressotec and sent the unit back.
I was so relieved that I had finally stopped my madness, so was my wife.

Anyway I am checking out a Mazzer Major Rio. Kind of battered but still in good shape.

Cheers-I think I am near the end of this espresso journey.

Bought the Mazzer Major-Super Automatic Rio ( same as the Astoria). What a piece of machinery. Approx. 50lbs of mean grinding machine.

cheers
