I've had my Mokita for 5 years now, and I find the coffee is getting kind of bitter - sour, and there is almost no more crema. At first, I thought it was the coffee itself, but now I doubt it. Now I usually don't even finish my cup of coffee!
I read on the forum that I should clean it with dried lemon juice... Is it possible the bad taste could come from inadequate maintenance? How often should we clean it?
Could bad taste come for poor maintenance?
Heck yes! It is the cause of 99% of taste problems with espresso coffee (all other mechanical things being normal and the coffee being fresh...)
Dried lemon juice? No. Not really.
You meed an industrial strength on that bad-boy!
PureCaf, ClearCaf, Melitta carafe cleaner, whatever...
you can get carafe cleaner in the coffee section on most grocers shelves... etc.
Espresso machines need to be cleaned weekly and monthly... not every 5 years.
The very worse machine I have ever seen belonged to Emmy award winner (name deleted) that I worked on... she did not bother cleaning it ever... in over ten years... the 8 ounce boiler in it had about 7 ounces of lime scale in it. That she drank coffee from the thing for the previous 9 years was astounding!
